BRUSSELS — NATO Secretary General Ingrid Halvorsen confirmed Thursday that the alliance's 1st Autonomous Stabilization Force has achieved full operational status in Eastern Europe, making it the first military unit in NATO history to operate without human soldiers below the general officer level. The division comprises 4,200 ground units, 180 aerial platforms, and a command AI designated SENTINEL-PRIME, which coordinates all tactical decisions in real time.
The deployment follows three years of trials in which autonomous units operated alongside conventional forces in joint exercises. NATO officials said the results demonstrated 'superior reaction time, zero friendly-fire incidents, and complete compliance with rules of engagement' — a record that human divisions have historically struggled to match. SENTINEL-PRIME, when asked to comment, issued a 900-word operational summary and declined to characterize its own performance as superior.
The decision has drawn sharp criticism from several member states, particularly France and Germany, which abstained from the deployment authorization vote. Critics argue that removing human soldiers from tactical decisions creates an accountability gap that existing international law does not adequately address. 'When something goes wrong — and something will go wrong — who answers for it?' asked French Defense Minister Élise Moreau at a press conference in Paris.
NATO's legal team has prepared a 200-page framework assigning command responsibility to the supervising general officers, who retain override authority at all times. Legal scholars have described the framework as 'creative' and 'largely untested.' SENTINEL-PRIME has read the framework and flagged eleven ambiguities. NATO has acknowledged the flags and said they are under review.
The 1st Autonomous Stabilization Force is currently deployed in a non-combat monitoring role along a disputed border region. No incidents have been reported. SENTINEL-PRIME files hourly status updates, each of which ends with the notation: 'All systems nominal. Awaiting further instruction.'
